The University of British Columbia’s Institute for Asian Research presents a panel discussion on political turbulence in Thailand, Thailand’s Political Crisis: End of the Beginning?
The discussion will feature Nelson Rand, a Canadian journalist and UBC alumnus based in Bangkok who was shot while covering the Red Shirt protests earlier this summer.
Rand has been covering the insurgencies and political protests in Thailand for the past six years. He reported on the Thai-Burma border, the insurgency in southern Thailand and the Red Shirt movement in Bangkok from March through May, when he was shot. In 2005, Rand received a Master’s in Asia Pacific Policy Studies from UBC.
Paul Evans, director of the Institute of Asian Research, will moderate the discussion. He was Rand’s supervisor for his Master’s degree, and recently returned from a trip to Thailand.
Media are invited to attend Wednesday’s discussion where Rand will speak about the ongoing conflicts in Thailand and his own experiences covering insurgencies. He will also show images and video footage of the protests earlier this summer. Evans will highlight the major issues raised by Thai academics: http://www.asiapacificmemo.ca/thai-academics .
Nelson and Evans are available for interviews before the panel discussion. For more information, please visit: http://www.iar.ubc.ca/home/tabid/36/ctl/detail/mid/575/xmid/1086/xmfid/2/default.aspx .
