Media are invited to watch the Thunderbots, a UBC student engineering team that will unveil the latest model of their soccer-playing robots before leaving for an international competition in Asia.
Taking place in Singapore from June 19 to 25, the 2010 World Cup Robot Soccer competition (RoboCup 2010) is the world’s largest robotics and artificial intelligence event.
The annual event draws nearly 4,000 participants from more than 40 countries. This year’s concurrence with the 2010 FIFA World Cup heightens the competitive edge and excitement.
The Thunderbots’ robots charge along at 2.5 metres per second and are powerful enough to kick a golf ball at 35 kilometres per hour.
They weigh 2.3 kilograms (5 lbs.) and measure 18 centimetres (7 inches) in diameter by 15 centimetres (6 inches) in height.
With no direct human control, these robots can adapt to various soccer plays and manoeuvres of the opposition. Using the latest technologies, they help advance the research in automation, computer learning and machine vision.
