Theoretical physicist Prof. Ian Affleck and evolutionary biologist Prof. Loren Rieseberg have been elected to the United Kingdom’s Royal Society. The UBC researchers are among 44 new fellows joining the ranks of the Society’s elite membership this year, and among five elected from Canadian institutions.

Prof. Anne Condon, Dept. of Computer Science and Assoc. Dean for Faculty Affairs and Strategic Initiatives at UBC, won the 2010 Computing Research Association Nico Habermann Award. Condon was honoured for her long standing service towards increasing the participation of women in computer science research.

In the latest issue of Reader’s Digest (June 2010), Prof. Benjamin Perrin of UBC Faculty of Law is featured in a story entitled “Freeing the Sex Slaves,” part of the magazine’s “Influential Canadian” series.
Perrin’s teaching and research include domestic and international criminal law, international humanitarian law, and human trafficking.

In March 2010, members of the Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering (CAEE) created a ‘reconnaissance team’ of researchers, led by UBC civil engineering professors Carlos Ventura and Perry Adebar, along with Dr. John Cassidy, Research Scientist at the National Research Council – Geological Survey of Canada. The researchers travelled to Chile to observe the damage caused and to assist in the recovery efforts.
Highlights of this reconnaisance trip will be featured on the Discovery Channel, in a program titled “Monster Quake: Will We Survive?”

Materials engineering professor David Dixon has received the 2010 Sherritt Hydrometallurgy Award from the Hydrometallurgy Section of the Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. A medal and a cash prize are given to recognize significant contributions in the field of hydrometallurgy.
Dixon is an expert in biohydrometallurgy and the co-inventor of Galvanox, a cleaner, greener and more profitable process for refining copper. He will be presented with the award during Uranium 2010 – the 2010 Annual Hydrometallurgical Meeting in Saskatoon from Aug. 15-18.

The Faculty of Applied Science announces Prof. Leslie Van Duzer as the new Director of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA). Her five-year appointment commences July 19, 2010.
“She will be a driving force, guiding and encouraging all involved with designing our built environment to make a positive difference in our world,” says Dean Tyseer Aboulnasr.
Van Duzer will be leading the school as it launches a fundraising campaign for a new building to house SALA and the UBC School of Community and Regional Planning.

Computer science graduate student Mahdi Tayarani Najaran won first place and undergraduate students Dan Ballard and Jonathan Tao won second place at the BCNET Broadband Innovation Challenge student competition at the BCNET/CANARIE Conference. The student projects were awarded $7,000. The awards were donated by industry partners Apple, Microsoft, Shaw Business Solutions and Juniper Networks.

Computer science graduate students were awarded at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) Student Research Competition in Cape Town, South Africa.
Zvonimir Rakamaric won second place for his submission “STORM: Static Unit Testing of Concurrent Programs”. Thomas Fritz won third place for his submission “Staying Aware of Relevant Feeds in Context.”
ICSE is an international event that provides a forum for industry, government and academia to discuss the latest developments, trends and innovations in software engineering.

Green College has launched a new collaboration with the Global Civic Policy Society, led by former mayor of Vancouver Sam Sullivan, as part of the College’s contribution to UBC’s community engagement. The new partnership will see the two organizations working together to offer Public Salons intended to bring ideas and dialogue on a range of topics to Vancouver audiences.
The Global Civic Policy Society works with academic institutions to introduce to the public new ways of thinking about old problems. Founded by Sullivan, the Global Civic Policy Society was developed to promote research and reflection on local government and citizenship.

Leora Kuttner, a clinical professor in the Dept. of Pediatrics at UBC and B.C. Children’s Hospital, will launch her new book A Child in Pain: What Health Professionals can do to Help, on June 8. Kutter has also co-produced and directed award winning documentaries on pediatric pain management.
