UBC students received the Co-op Student of the Year Award

Computer science student Neil Thomas and microbiology and immunology student Yan Xu are co-recipients of the 2009 Science Co-op Student of the Year Award.

For five co-op work terms, Thomas worked at Safe Software and Google and was awarded with the Google Internship Scholarship for 2009 with an offer for full-time employment. He has maintained a GPA of 97.6 per cent at UBC and  serves at UBC Commonwealth Club as Vice-President, Director of Communication and Director of IT. 

Xu started his co-op experience at Amgen followed by an eight month placement with Dr. Elisabeth Maurer, a scientist with the Canadian Blood Services (CBS) and the President and CTO of LightIntegra Technology Inc.  He initiated and co-designed a UBC student directed seminar course and was selected to participate in the Vancouver Board of Trade – Leaders of Tomorrow.
