UBC Faculty Research Awards announced

The Office of the Vice-President Research and International has announced the recipients of the annual UBC Faculty Research Awards and will honour them at the Celebrate Research Week Awards gala on March 11 at the Museum of Anthropology.

The award nominations are made by students, colleagues and alumni and adjudicated by the Faculty Awards Committee which includes members from the Arts and Humanities, Medicine, Science and Applied Science disciplines.

UBC mathematician wins career award

Nassif Ghoussoub, a professor in the UBC Dept. of Mathematics and scientific director of the Banff International Research Station, has received the 2010 Canadian Mathematical Society Borwein Career Award.  The award recognizes individuals who have made exceptional, broad and continued contributions to Canadian mathematics.

Engineering prof wins mentorship award

UBC Chemical and Biological Engineering Asst. Prof. Eric Lagally has been awarded a 2010 Undergraduate Research Opportunities Mentorship Award, for excellence in mentoring undergraduate students in research at UBC. Lagally was nominated by UBC’s 2009 iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machines) team for his leadership and support of students in their efforts to compete in the iGEM Competition hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

UBC Asian Library celebrates 50th anniversary

UBC’s Asian Library, home to the largest Asian volume collection in Canada, will commemorate its 50th anniversary with a celebration.  Speakers will include Ingrid Parent, University Librarian, Eleanor Yuen, Asian Library Head Librarian, Robban A.J. Toleno,  Asian Studies PhD student, Assoc. Prof. Henry Yu, Dept. of History, Wes Pue, Vice Provost and AVP Academic Resources, and a representative of the Ron Bick Lee family.

cIRcle at UBC’s Celebrate Research Week

Ingrid Parent, UBC’s University Librarian, is inviting members of the UBC community to an event entitled Get up close with cIRcle: Revealing your research to the world.  cIRcle is UBC’s openly accessible digital repository for research and teaching materials created by the UBC community and its partners. Three UBC scholars will talk about using cIRcle to disseminate research.
