Alex Bilodeau won Canada’s first-ever Olympic gold medal on Canadian soil on Sunday, a matter of great pride for Canadians.
UBC Psychology professor Jessica Tracy can discuss the pride we feel as we celebrate gold medal performances, how we express these feelings and the purpose of them.
Tracy has also studied feelings expressed by Olympic athletes. Her research showed that the pride and shame Olympic athletes express are universal biological reactions and not learned responses.
