During the month of January, UBC’s Vancouver campus is hosting events to promote awareness of the serious issue of sexual assault and safety on university campuses. Acclaimed gender violence educator Jackson Katz will be presenting an evening public talk entitled Tough Guys: Sexual Violence, Media, and the Crisis in Masculinity, a multi-media presentation on how mainstream media images – from sports, TV, Hollywood film, advertising and music video – help to promote violent masculinity as a cultural norm. Katz uses clips from his films, including Tough Guise: Violence, Media, and the Crisis in Masculinity and Spin the Bottle: Sex, Lies and Alcohol, to provide audiences with conceptual tools for reading media critically, especially those concerned with masculinity, heterosexuality and violence.

Katz will also be holding a free workshop for students and the public on why gender violence is an issue for men.
