UBC hosts student in Fulbright program

UBC will be hosting Fulbright award recipient, Sara Parke, a public health student from Stanford University. Parke will be taking up her award at UBC from September 2009 until June 2010. She will conduct research on ethical, legal and social issues in neuroimaging.

The Fulbright program is an educational exchange program between the United States and countries from around the world.

UBC Librarian to lead global library group

UBC University Librarian Ingrid Parent was recently elected as the president-elect (2009-2011) and the president (2011-2013) of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). The announcement was made at IFLA’s 75th World Library and Information Congress, held in Milan in August.

Parent, formerly with Library and Archives Canada, joined UBC Library in July.

Design Centre for Sustainability receives National Merit Award

elementsLAB, a consulting, research and community service group at the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture Design Centre for Sustainability, has received a 2009 National Merit Award by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) for their study Green Infrastructure in Calgary’s Mobility Corridors.

As part of the Plan It Calgary initiative, their study framed the issues and principles related to mitigating environmental impacts of mobility corridors in Calgary, particularly to air, water and habitat. The CSLA jury described the comprehensive report as smart, accessible and a useful tool for landscape architects in increasing the sustainability of transportation corridors.

Engineering Physics student wins MDA scholarship

Shaina Johl, a fourth-year engineering physics co-op student, has won the Summer 2009 MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) Ltd. Co-op & Intern Scholarship award, a $2,000 scholarship to be used towards educational expenses.

Johl was granted this award based on her contributions during the work term, academic standing, relevance of course work, future employment potential with MDA, and support from project management.

UBC and CBC co-host panel at Asian American Journalists Association conference

In their inaugural visit to Vancouver, the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) will meet with Vancouver journalists and media professionals to discuss issues of diversity and the future of the journalism industry.

UBC and CBC will co-present a panel discussion New Frontiers: Diversity, new media and journalism’s future in Canada and the US. Panelists will include Winnie Hwo, News Director, Fairchild TV; Joanna Lee Young, Reporter, The Vancouver Sun; Prof. Alfred Hermida, UBC School of Journalism; Sharon Chan, National President, AAJA (to be confirmed); moderated by Alden E. Habacon, Manager of Diversity Initatives, CBC Television.

A dinner with a roundtable discussion will follow.

Animal Welfare Program presents lecture

The Animal Welfare Program in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems presents the 2009 Peter Stratton Memorial Lecture, Enriching the Lives of Zoo Animals. The event will feature Steve Ross, Supervisor of Behavioral and Cognitive Research and Chair of the Chimpanzee Species Survival Plan at the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.

The lecture is presented with the support of the Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada.
