Sauder's Robert H. Lee Graduate School opens one of Canada's first residences for MBA students

Today, the Robert H. Lee Graduate School at UBC’s Sauder School of Business officially opens MBA House, one the first residences of its kind dedicated to Master of Business Administration students in Canada.
Located in Wesbrook Place neighbourhood on UBC’s Vancouver campus, the four-storey, $12-million facility offers its 88 student residents a collegial and diverse social, intellectual, and cultural environment to live and learn.
“MBA House represents a true extension of the Robert H. Lee Graduate School experience,” said Daniel F. Muzyka, Dean of the Sauder School of Business at UBC. “This is a place to live and learn, one that opens doors to new opportunities and connects our students to the people and companies they aspire to work with.”
The 40,000 square-foot facility has 81 furnished single and double suites with kitchens, a library, a café and lounge and common areas for studying, events and networking. It has been awarded Residential Environmental Assessment Program (REAP) Silver green certification, was constructed with a high percentage of recycled building materials and features water- and energy-efficient fixtures, appliances and lighting.
According to Adera Development Corp. CEO Kevin Mahon, a Sauder faculty advisory board member and alumnus who helped spearhead the project, MBA House was inspired by McArthur Hall, a residence for graduate business students at Harvard University named after UBC alumnus and former Harvard Business School dean John McArthur.
Mahon says UBC’s MBA House – like McArthur Hall and Stanford University’s Schwab Residential Centre – has been built to enhance the experience of advanced business study and to foster links between students with international business perspectives. He points to the residence’s Commons Room as the new meeting place for business school stakeholders of all kinds.
The facility, created by UBC Properties Trust (construction), Raymond Letkeman Architects Inc. (architects) and Calvert Design Studio (interiors and furnishing), is one of the first residential developments completed in the rapidly emerging community on UBC’s South Campus.
