UBC professor receives honorary degree
Prof. Michael Hayden, Director, Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics, will be one of 12 who will receive honorary degrees this June from the University of Alberta.
As a leading clinical geneticist, Hayden is best known for his research on Huntington’s disease and genetic diseases. He will host the next World Congress on Huntington’s disease in September.
Hayden will receive an Honorary Doctor of Science and deliver an address during a convocation ceremony on June 4.
UBC professor named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40
Asst. Prof. Sam Wiseman, Dept. of Surgery, was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40TM for 2008. Wiseman specializes in surgical oncology, endocrine surgery and head and neck surgery at St. Paul’s Hospital. His research focuses on thyroid, breast and colorectal cancer.
Honourees were selected based on five criteria: vision and leadership, innovation and achievement, impact, community involvement and contribution, and strategy for growth.

Breast cancer research projects awarded grants
Three UBC professors have been awarded grants by the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance (CBCRA) for their breast cancer research projects.
• Prof. Samuel Aparicio, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, received a CBCRA Operating Grant for his study on mammographic density and columnar cell lesions of the breast.
• Assoc. Prof. Darren Warburton, Human Kinetics, received a CBCRA Feasibility Grant for his pilot study testing the effectiveness of interactive video games on the health status and quality of life of post-menopausal breast cancer survivors.
• Asst. Prof. Karen Cheung, Electrical and Computer Engineering, received a CBCRA IDEA grant for her project on the three-dimensional flow-through microfluidic cell culture system for anticancer agent screening.

UBC engineering student donates hair
To prepare for her Engineers Without Borders (EWB) volunteer placement in Burkina Faso, electrical engineering student Annelies Tjebbes cut her strawberry blonde hair which she will donate to a wig bank for cancer patients.
Tjebbes will be working with the local government in the town of Bogandé on water and sanitation issues.

SALA supporter passes away
Mr. Henry (Syd) Skinner, a UBC honorary alumnus and a supporter of the landscape architecture program in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, passed away on April 19.
In 1989, Mr. Skinner established the Henry (Syd) Skinner Scholarship, which provided funding for four students in the landscape architecture program. His lifetime contributions to the endowment for this scholarship total more than $500,000, and have helped more than 55 students achieve their goals of becoming Landscape Architects.

Engineering students participate in service learning program
Five UBC Engineering students will work in Lesotho as part of the Go Global and Applied Science International Service Learning Program. The team will work with local community members to implement a sanitation system in Qacha’s Neck, a rural area of Lesotho.
The engineering team includes Dan Boland (fourth-year Mechanical Engineering), Ross Coleman (fourth-year Integrated Engineering), Sam Bailey (third-year Integrated Engineering), Ricardo Segovia (third-year Geological Engineering) and Laura Jones (second-year Mechanical Engineering).

UBC participates in Bike To Work Week
UBC will participate in the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition’s Bike to Work Week on May 11-17. The UBC Commuter Station will be giving bike checks, free food and prizes on May 13 from 7:30-10 a.m. on University Blvd. near the outdoor pool.

2010 Paralympics: Tickets on sale
Ticket sales begin today for the 2010 Paralympics which will occur March 12-21 in Vancouver and Whistler.
The UBC Thunderbird Arena will host ice sledge hockey and is one of only four 2010 Paralympic competition venues. Of the seven days of sledge hockey competition, four will occur when UBC is in session –May 16 to May 19 – and will feature between two and four games daily.

UBC School of Nursing presents special collection
In honour of Nursing Week, and as part of its 90th anniversary celebrations, the UBC School of Nursing will present a display of artifacts from the career of UBC alumnus Dr. Lyle Creelman.
Creelman worked as Director of Public Health Nursing for the City of Vancouver and became President of the Registered Nurses Association of B.C. Her achievements include: Chief Medical Office for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration in the British zone of occupied Germany, where she pioneered specialized nurses’ training programs; Chief Nursing Officer with the World Health Organization; and co-author of the Ballie-Creelman report, a main reference for public health professionals in Canada.
Creelman was honoured with the Medal of Service of the Order of Canada (1971), the Canadian Centennial Medal (1967) and Honorary Doctorate degrees from both the University of New Brunswick in 1963 and from UBC in 1992.
