UBC powers down for Earth Hour 2009
UBC will join World Wildlife Fund (WWF)’s Earth Hour 2009 by powering down a day in advance on March 27. The goal is a reduction of electrical usage by five per cent from a typical weekend. UBC’s decrease in power consumption will be monitored live at http://client.pulseenergy.com/dashboards/ubc.
Tips on how to power down for Earth Hour:
• Turn off all non-essential lights when leaving a room (classrooms, offices, washrooms)
• Turn off lights when leaving work
• Turn computers on standby when not on for 15 minutes or longer
• Turn off computers, printers and photocopiers when leaving work• Unplug small appliances (kettles, microwaves, coffee makers, charging devices, stereos)
• Close open windows to reduce heat loss
• Ask professors to turn off lights after class
• Study without a computer – read, write notes and exchange ideas with classmates
• Turn off lights in residences
Send Earth Hour stories to kara.bowen@ubc.ca. Stories will be posted on UBC’s Climate Action Plan at http://climateaction.ubc.ca/.
