VanCity awards UBC Farm
The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm has received a $15,000 grant from VanCity director Wendy Holm.
With this support, the UBC Farm will evaluate, develop, and demonstrate the "organiponico" concept at the UBC Farm site. Seen in Cuba, this specialized form of urban agriculture calls for intensively managed market farms which grow produce for local consumption within the city core.
The goal of the UBC Farm project is to determine which elements of the highly successful "organiponico" model would be beneficial in the Vancouver context, and to construct an intensive garden site that demonstrates these elements. Work on the project will commence this April.
UBC librarian honoured
Dean Giustini, librarian of the UBC Library Biomedical Branch, has been named 2009 Mover and Shaker (Tech Evangelist) by Library Journal magazine. Giustini created the UBC Health Library Wiki for health librarians to store and share information they use to teach.

Engineering physics student receives two co-op awards
Engineering physics student Dorian Gangloff is the winner of both the 2008 UBC Science Co-op Student of the Year award and the Association of Co-operative Education (ACE) Student of the Year award. ACE is the co-operative education association for BC and Yukon.
Gangloff’s co-op work terms were at UBC Physics and Astronomy (Structured Surface Physics lab), nanoplus GmbH in Wurzburg, Germany, and the University of Ottawa as an Undergraduate Student Research Awards student.
Gangloff was selected based on his work experience, his extra-curricular work as President of the UBC Engineering Physics Student Society, and his support and promotion of co-op as an important part of an undergraduate degree.
