The UBC community is invited to the Hockey Canada Cup sledge hockey tournament at the UBC Thunderbird Arena from Feb. 24 – March 1.
Hockey Canada and UBC’s 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Secretariat are pleased to extend a complimentary invitation to all UBC students, staff, faculty, alumni and the University Neighbourhoods Association to attend 7 p.m. games on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25.
Team Canada, the reigning World and Paralympic Champions, will host sledge hockey teams from Germany, Japan and the USA. This is one of the only opportunities to see Team Canada in Vancouver before the 2010 Winter Games.
While quantities last, free tickets are available at War Memorial Gym (beginning Feb. 19, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.) with appropriate identification or online at www.ticketmaster.ca, special offer, code word UBC2425. Service charges apply with online orders only. Two tickets per person.

UBC athletes receive 2009 Premier’s Athletic Awards
UBC athletes Annamay Pierse and Michael Mason received the Premier’s Athletic Awards at a ceremony on Feb. 12 at the Sheraton Wall Centre.
Pierse was selected as the University Female 2009 Premier’s Athletic Award recipient. Her accomplishments include: 2008 Canadian Interuniversity Sport National Championship – won five gold and two silver medals, set two individual and one team Canadian national records and was Sport Female Swimmer of the Meet; 2008 Canada West Meet – named Female Swimmer of the Meet and set three Canada West records; 2008 Olympian for Team Canada.
High Jump athlete Mason was selected as the University Male 2009 Premier’s Athletic Award recipient and was also selected as the male award recipient for BC Athletics. His accomplishments include: three- time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) high jump champion and record holder; a gold medal at the 2008 Canadian Championships; first place as a Canadian Olympic Team Qualifying Standard at 2008 Washington Indoor Meet; and eighth place at 2008 World Indoor Athletics Championships.

Physics professor awarded fellowship
UBC Dept. of Physics and Astronomy Asst. Prof. Robert Raussendorf was awarded the 2009 Sloan Research Fellowship for his work in physics.
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation awarded more than $6 million to 118 early scientists, mathematicians, and economists as Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellows. The winners from 61 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada are conducting research at the frontiers of physics, chemistry, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics and neuroscience.

CIHR Café Scientifique presents talk on life balance
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Café Scientifique presents The Unhurried Family: Reducing Stress and Enhancing Life Balance, three short talks on research into stress and coping in infants, couples, and families, and strategies to enhance life balance, health and well-being.
The panel of experts will include UBC Asst. Prof. Liisa Holsti, Assoc. Prof. Catherine Backman, Assoc. Prof. Anita DeLongis and moderator Asst. Prof. Melinda Suto.

Green College hosts Flavours of British Columbia
Green College will host a wine tasting and food grazing event where attendees will sample a wide variety from established and mature vintage wineries from B.C. After an aperitif, each wine will be matched with an appropriate food dish, adding up to a dinner that will be served at “grazing stations.”
