The Massey Lecture Series presents Margaret Atwood at the Chan Centre

As part of The Massey Lecture Series, poet, novelist, and essayist Margaret Atwood will discuss the topic of debt at a lecture entitled Payback, Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth.

Atwood is a winner of the Booker Prize, the Scotiabank Giller Prize, and the Governor General’s Literary Award and is a bestselling author of more than 35 books of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, including The Handmaid’s Tale, Alias Grace, The Blind Assassin, and Oryx and Crake.

UBC Press book wins award

UBC Press book Hunters at the Margin: Native People and Wildlife Conservation in the Northwest Territories, by John Sandlos, has won the U.S. Forest History Society’s 2008 Charles A. Weyerhaeuser Book Award, an award recognizing authors in forest and conservation history.

Prof. Yusuf Altintas has been recognized by Pratt and Whitney Canada (P&WC) as one of its six Research Fellows across Canada for his contribution to P&WC technology programs in manufacturing and the aerospace industry.

P&WC has renewed Altintas’ NSERC/Pratt and Whitney Chair in Virtual High-performance Machining for an additional five years and appointed Assoc. Prof. Steve Feng as NSERC/P&WC Associate Chair.

History professor a finalist for book prize

UBC Dept. of History’s Prof.Tina Loo is a finalist for best English-language book in the Social Sciences in the annual Scholarly Book Prizes for her book States of Nature: Conserving Canada’s Wildlife in the Twentieth Century.

The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences will announce the four winners – two in the humanities and two in social sciences, with one for best work in each official language – on Nov. 1 in Ottawa.

UBC professor receives lifetime achievement awardUBC professor receives lifetime achievement award

Prof. Emeritus Janusz Laskowski of Mining Engineering received the International Mineral Processing Council (IMPC)’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Beijing on Sept. 27.

This award recognizes a lifetime achievement and contribution to IMPC in the advancement of the art, science and industrial practice of mineral processing.

Chemical and Biological Engineering’s Assoc. Prof. Mark Martinez and Mechanical Engineering’s Assoc. Prof. Carl Ollivier-Gooch and Assoc. Prof. James Olson in collaboration with Robert Gooding, Vice President of Technology, Advanced Fiber Technologies, have received the British Columbia Innovation Council (BCIC) 2008 Lieutenant Governor’s Technology Innovation Award for their new advanced pulp screen technology.
