Materials engineering student receives research awardMaterials engineering student receives research award

UBC materials engineering graduate student Reza Roumina received the Best Young Researcher award at the 11th International Conference on Aluminum Alloys (ICAA) held September 22-26 in Aachen, Germany.

Working under the supervision of Prof. Chad Sinclair, Roumina received the award for his paper and talk entitled Effect of Recovery on the Tensile Response of an Al-Mg-Sc Alloy.

ICAA is an international conference profiling new developments in aluminum alloys and their applications in the automotive, aerospace, packaging, buildings and rail sectors.

Engineering student teams win in design competitionEngineering student teams win in design competition

UBC Engineering’s Brace Team—students Paul Hahto, Angela Melnyk, Liz Arnott, Isaac Herscovitch and instructor Mike Van der Loos—has won the inaugural Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Society of British Columbia’s Excellence in Engineering Design Competition and $5,000 for their design of Flexi-Brace, a dynamic neck brace.

UBC Engineering’s Gaze Tracker Team—electrical and computer engineering PhD student Craig Hennessey and Prof. Peter Lawrence—won an Innovation Award and $1,000 for Gaze Tracker, a technology which enables ALS patients to communicate with others on a 2D computer screen or in 3D space.

Electrical and computer engineering receives grant and awards

UBC Electrical and Computer Engineering’s Prof. Guy Dumont and Prof. Meeko Oishi, in collaboration with Dept. of Anesthesiology’s Prof. Mark Ansermino, Prof. Stephan Schwarz and Prof. Bern MacLeod, have received a $392,400 grant from Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) for their research project Control of Anesthesia.

UBC Electrical and Computer Engineering fellow Min Chen and co-authors Victor Leung and Siwen Mao won runner-up for best paper for Directional Controlled Fusion in Wireless Sensor Network, at the International Conference on Heterogeneous Networking for Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness, held in Hong Kong in July.

UBC Electrical and computer engineering PhD candidate Hui Chen and co-authors Henry Chan and Victor Leung won best paper for A Cross-layer Scheduling Scheme for Wireless Multimedia Transmissions with Adaptive Modulation and Coding at the Wireless Track of the International Conference on Broadband Communications, Network, and Systems held in London, UK in September.

UBC United way has begun its 2008 The Drive for Five campaign with a goal to raise $500,000.

Last year $418,000 was raised in direct donations, making UBC’s employee campaign one of the largest in the Lower Mainland.
