Engineers Without Borders UBC holds annual kickoff
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) UBC is holding its annual Kickoff meeting to inform and educate students and faculty about the EWB organization.
Two Junior Fellows, EWB overseas volunteers who have recently returned from Zambia and Malawi, will share stories and information about EWB overseas volunteer program. The president of the chapter will also talk about the work that EWB does in Canada.

UBC Prof. receives King Albert I Memorial award
Prof. Hans Schreier will be presented with the King Albert I Memorial award on Sept. 6th, in Engadine, Switzerland for his achievements in mountain science.
Schreier’s research focuses on watershed management and the human and natural impacts on mountain systems of the Andes, Himalayas and British Columbia.
The King Albert I Memorial award was established in 1994 and is given every two years to honour accomplishments in science, art or social welfare.
CFCAS awards funding for UBC research projects
The Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences (CFCAS) has awarded $313,400 to UBC to support research that will advance Canada’s science and technology objectives while helping prepare for the impacts of climate change.
Prof. Roland Stull in the Dept. of Earth and Ocean Sciences and Prof. Allan Bertram in the Dept. of Chemistry will lead the two research projects: one looks at improving forecasting and warning capability, and the other investigates the effects of international pollutants on Western Canada’s air quality.
Dental Hygiene research team wins grant for clinical trial
UBC Faculty of Dentistry Dental Hygiene research team, Clinical Asst. Prof. Pauline Imai and research team member Penny Hatzimanolakis, have been awarded the Canadian Foundation for Dental Hygiene Research and Education (CFDHRE) grant for 2008.
The $12,060 grant will be used to conduct a clinical trial comparing the ability of an interdental brush and dental floss to reduce plaque and bleeding on patients with intact papillae.

Chemistry professor receives award
UBC Asst. Prof. Jennifer Love has received the AstraZeneca Canada Award in Chemistry for 2008 in recognition of her work in the field of organic and organometallic chemistry.
Love was chosen by a panel of peers based on her work in the development of new catalytic reactions for organic synthesis.

Seminar on Korean folk performance arts
The Centre for Korean Research will be hosting a seminar given by Prof. Nathan Hesselink on his fieldwork and research on Korean folk performance arts, focusing on folk drumming and dance in rural and urban forms.
