UBC research studies receive Agriculture Canada’s support

UBC has received contributions to two applied research studies from Agri-Food Canada’s Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food program.

  • $203,500 to the UBC Dairy Education and Research Centre and Department of Civil Engineering to create a slow-release fertilizer by recovering nutrients from dairy manure waste. The study will also explore converting the bio-energy produced into heat or electricity.
  • $30,000 to the UBC Animal Welfare Program to examine how the overall health of dairy cattle is affected by the design and comfort of their living facilities which will help producers understand how cow comfort affects cow health, production, and fertility.

UBC Mining Engineering launches facility for energy efficient rock crushing

UBC’S Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, Koeppern Machinery Australia and BC Mining Research has launched the High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) pilot testing and research facility.

HPGR, widely used in the cement industry and diamond industry, is emerging as an important new technology in mineral processing because it offers substantial energy savings over conventional grinding.

The first of its kind in North and South America, the facility will be used to test a wider range of minerals including copper, iron, gold, zinc, nickel and diamonds.
