Muzyka appointed to the Research Council

Prof. Daniel Muzyka, Dean of UBC’s Sauder School of Buisness, has been appointed to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) in recognition of his experience in the private sector and academia.

NSERC is a federal agency which annually supports some 25,000 university students and postdoctoral fellows in their advanced studies, funds more than 11,000 university professors and encourages more than 1,400 Canadian companies to participate and invest in university research projects.

UBC knowledge cluster funded by SSHRC

Assoc. Prof. Penney Clark, Curriculum Studies, will be the lead researcher of a history education network, one of 11 strategic knowledge clusters chosen for funding by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) this year. Each network will receive up to $2.1 million over the next seven years.

Strategic knowledge clusters are national and international research networks with partners in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors to research issues that affect Canadians’ quality of life, including globalization, homelessness, business sustainability, education and heritage.

SSHRC is an independent federal government agency that funds university-based research and graduate training through national peer-review competitions.

UBC surgeon named outstanding teacher

Assist. Prof. Ravi Sidhu, Division of Vascular Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine, has been awarded the 2008 Outstanding Teaching Award from the Association for Surgical Education in recognition of his commitment to teaching and role modeling.

The Association for Surgical Education represents medical schools and institutions throughout the United States and Canada.

Professor named national humanities fellow

Prof. Richard Unger, Department of History, has received the Donnelley Family Fellowship from the National Humanities Center in North Carolina, making him one of 42 resident Fellows for the 2008-09 academic year. This fellowship is awarded to a scholar working at the intersection of nature, environment and the humanities. The prospective title of Unger’s project at the Center is Energy, Economy, Environment in Early Modern Europe.

Optimizing breast biopsy decision-making

UBC’s Centre for Health Care Management (CHCM) will host a lecture by Assist. Prof. Oguzhan Alagoz, Industrial and Systems Engineering of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, on Using Markov Decision Processes (MDP) to Optimize Breast Biopsy Decision Making.

CHCM was established to link BC health authority management with the combined management and health system knowledge and research expertise of nine collaborating UBC faculties and schools.

Filipinos in Canada after 50 years

UBC’s Centre for Southeast Asian Research and Dahong Pilipino (The Filipino Canadian Community and Business Directory) will host a seminar and launch of the book Seeking a Better Life Abroad: A Study of Filipinos in Canada (1957-2007), by Eleanor del Rio-Laquian and Aprodicio Laquian, Professor Emeritus, Community and Regional Planning. The authors will present findings from their 2006 nationwide survey of Filipinos in Canada.

Talk on Jia Zhangke’s film The World

UBC’s Centre for Chinese Research will host a lecture by Prof. Stephanie Hemelryk Donald, Director of the Institute for International Studies at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia. Her talk is entitled Global Beijing: ‘The World’ Is A Violent Place: a talk on Jia Zhangke’s film ‘The World’.

Vancouver Student Film Festival back on the big screen

The Vancouver Student Film Festival (VSFF) will showcase 29 short films, videos and animation by BC post-secondary students and alumni. A panel of eight industry professionals will judge the films to determine festival awards, worth over $10,000 in cash and prizes.

The VSFF was created in 2005 by UBC students and graduates who felt a need for a local film festival which focused solely on this population of artists.

UBC Centenary screening series continues with The Cabin Movie

The UBC Film Production Alumni Association will present a screening of UBC Film alumnus Dylan Akio Smith’s The Cabin Movie, preceded by Richard Martin’s Mixed Signals and A.J. Bond’s short film, Hirsute. The filmmakers will participate in a Q&A session after the screening.

The evening is the third of a four-part 2008 UBC Centenary Screening Series.
