From CSI to Healthy Cities and Marijuana: UBC Highlights Cutting-edge Research at the Eighth Annual Celebrate Research Week

CSI, diabetes, global access, healthy cities and the health of children living in marijuana grow operations are some of the topics to be discussed during the University of British Columbia’s Celebrate Research Week (CRW), a series of public forums, talks and presentations focused on UBC research that touches lives and communities.

More than 50 events will be held March 4 -13 at all UBC campuses, including Point Grey, research campuses at hospital sites, Robson Square and UBC Okanagan. Most events are free.

Are You at Risk: Diabetes — Genes or Lifestyle? is an interactive public forum with leading diabetes researchers to discuss the link between genetics and lifestyle risk factors in diabetes as well as explore prevention and management strategies. Learn about the latest in diabetes research March 8, 10 a.m. – noon at UBC Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, Victoria Learning Theatre, 1961 East Mall.

Sleep: A Window on Infant and Young Children’s Development: UBC Nursing Assoc. Prof Wendy Hall will discuss the often times controversial topic of sleep deprivation in children and infants. March 8, 2-3 p.m. at UBC, Instructional Resource Centre, Lecture Theatre 6.

Action on Seafood Sustainability: Consumer Impact on Dwindling Marine Resources is an interactive discussion to highlight issues around seafood sustainability. Representatives of diverse interest groups will explore ecological, social and economic concerns. March 10, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. at UBC Robson Square.

The Global Legacy: In 2007, UBC became the first university in Canada to develop a broad strategy to ensure global access to its technologies. This panel discussion will feature presentations by three leading UBC researchers involved in projects that adhere to these global access principles. March 10, 3 – 4 p.m. at UBC Michael Smith Laboratories, 2185 East Mall.

The Global University: Needs-based Research to Address the 10/90 Gap: According to the Global Forum for Health Research, only 10 per cent of research dollars are spent on the diseases that affect 90 per cent of the world’s population. This presentation will explore universities’ responsibility to address this gap. March 11, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. at UBC Michael Smith Laboratories Multipurpose Room 301, 2185 East Mall.

The Health & Safety of Children Living in Marijuana Grow Operations explores the pediatric health risks associated with the environments in which marijuana is grown as a home-based industry and how this has become a child welfare concern. March 11, 4 – 5:30 p.m. at UBC School of Social Work Room 200, 2080 West Mall.

Wine Library Open House: The Wine Library is part of the Wine Research Centre at UBC that studies young B.C. wines and advises vintners on wine production. March 12, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at UBC Health Building, 2205 East Mall.

Café Scientifique — Healthy Cities: Four out of five Canadians spend their lives in towns or cities, and the urban environment can be a determinant of health. Leading experts in urban environmental health discuss some of the health issues in Vancouver such as pollution hotspots in Vancouver and the safety of bicycle paths. March 12, 7 p.m. at Steamworks, 375 Water Street.

Science and Intrigue: CSI at the LSI: The UBC Life Sciences Institute is hosting an invited audience of Vancouver high school students to participate in a half-day of hands-on workshops based on the concept of a Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) theme. March 13, noon – 5 p.m. at UBC Life Sciences Center, 2350 Health Sciences Hall.

Sustainability and Social Enterprise: Asst. Prof. James Tansey of UBC’s Sauder School of Business will discuss the findings of a survey of social enterprises across North America and Europe. March 13, 5 -7:30pm, at UBC Robson Square Theatre.
