Board of Governors recognizes UNA Chair Jim Taylor
The UBC Board of Governors (BoG) recognized inaugural Chair Jim Taylor for his University Neighbourhoods Association service. The BoG also approved the conclusion of a new Neighbours’ Agreement that sees the UNA becoming an advisory board to the UBC Board of Governors.

Registration opens for Student Leadership Conference
The 2008 Student Leadership Conference, organized by UBC students for all UBC students and student groups, will include more than 50 interactive workshops and seminars on collaboration and sharing resources among student leaders. Speakers include Carl Wieman, Director of the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative; Peter Busby, Green Architect with Busby, Perkins & Will; Lisa Palleson-Stallan, Founder of Lotuswear; and Stephen Lewis, Chair of the Board of the Stephen Lewis Foundation in Canada.

Adjunct Professor one of Canada’s top 100 Powerful Women
Dianne Doyle, Adjunct Professor in UBC’s School of Nursing and President and CEO of Providence Health Care, was ranked as one of Canada’s most 100 powerful women by the Women’s Executive Network, a Toronto-based networking and advocacy group. The list was published in the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business. Doyle was listed in the Public Sector Leaders category, where honorees are chosen by the size of the operating budgets for which they are responsible.
Honorary professor credited at the University of Toronto
Verna Huffman Splane, Honorary Professor of UBC’s School of Nursing, received a Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa from the University of Toronto earlier this month. Splane’s professional career included international projects and forging relationships with key people in nursing roles worldwide, and with organizations such as the World Health Organization and the International Council of Nurses. In retirement Splane continues to lead a range of policy initiatives in nursing and health care.
CBC’S Peter Mansbridge hosts panel discussion at the Chan Centre
Peter Mansbridge, CBC anchor, will host the Year-in-Review “At Issue” panel at UBC’s Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. Panelists are Chantal Hebert, columnist for the Toronto Star; Andrew Coyne, columnist for Maclean’s; and Allan Gregg, newspaper contributor and host of the TVO talk show Allan Gregg – In Conversation With.
The public is invited to attend the panel discussion from 2 – 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 13 at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. Registration is required. Registration for this event is CLOSED and FULLY BOOKED.

UBC professor receives $1.8m Alzheimer’s Professorship
Prof. Howard Feldman, Head of the Division of Neurology and Director of the UBC Hospital Clinic for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders, recently received the Ralph Fisher and Alzheimer Society of BC Professorship in Alzheimer’s Research, worth $1.8 million. The Professorship was made possible by donations from the Ralph Fisher Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Society of British Columbia, and will be used to support the research and clinical activities at the Clinic.
Campus and Community Planning hosts open house for Old Auditorium
UBC’s Campus and Community Planning is holding a Public Open House to discuss Development Permit Application 07032: Old Auditorium Renovation. The proposal includes a two-storey addition to the west side of the building and interior renovation under the UBC Renew program.

UBC Library unveils rare collections vault site
UBC Library has launched a site where users can access a treasure trove of images and stories from the Library’s special collections. Items range from the meticulous – such as zoological giraffe drawings by an 18th-century naturalist – to the monumental, including pages from a German book of prayer created in 1500.
Users can join the Vault community for free. Each month, they will receive an image via e-mail, along with its story. The site also contains gifts inspired by Vault images, including holiday-themed card sets. Future gifts will likely include journals, umbrellas and prints. A portion of gift proceeds is directed to one of the Library’s many funds and endowments.

UBC director appointed to Pearson e-learning advisory board
Michelle Lamberson, Director of UBC’s Office of Learning Technology, has been appointed to the Pearson Publishing Advisory Board. The Board’s mandate is to provide guidance and feedback for the company’s e-learning efforts in the U.S. and abroad. The Board is comprised of senior executives from higher education institutions around the world.
Pearson Publishing provides research-based print and digital programs for students of all ages. Pearson recently acquired eCollege, a major provider of comprehensive eLearning technology and services.

UBC Botanical Garden’s holiday offerings
On Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., Botanical Garden members will receive 15 per cent off on books and 25 per cent off on all other merchandise, excluding wreaths and baskets. Refreshments will be provided; membership cards are required.
For those wishing a Christmas wreath, Friends of the Garden have made 300 Christmas wreaths which include materials from the Garden. They come in small, medium and large sizes (10” – 30”) and cost $30 and up. Decorations and miniature Christmas trees are also available.
Wreaths are available until Dec. 9, while supplies last. Winter hours at the Shop in the Garden are 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. All proceeds support research, education and plant conservation at UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research.

UBC professor honoured by Royal Society of Canada
Prof. George Sawatzky, joint professor in Chemistry and Physics & Astronomy, received the Henry Marshall Tory Medal from the Royal Society of Canada – The Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada. Sawatzky is acknowledged for his research on the electronic structure of correlated electron materials and electron spectroscopy.

UBC pathology learning centre opens
The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine opened the UBC David F. Hardwick Pathology Learning Centre earlier this month, an educational resource for learning about the causes and mechanisms of human disease and for studying clinicopathologic correlations.
The Learning Centre houses The William Boyd Museum of Pathology, a small library, study space, and soon The Thurlbeck Collection of pulmonary pathology. The Learning Centre also has networked computer terminals for access to a virtual collection of The Boyd Museum as well as teaching cases for medical students and postgraduate trainees.
Courses for continuing medical education are in development. The complete content of the Learning Centre website can be accessed from networked computers at each of the Learning Centre’s satellite sites, while an abbreviated version is available to the general public. The Learning Centre is named in honour of Dr. Hardwick, Head of Department for 14 years beginning in 1976, and is located at The Gordon and Leslie Diamond Health Care Centre at Vancouver General Hospital.

Research centre opens discussion on Japanese marketing report
UBC’s Centre for Japanese Research will host a panel discussion on The Japan Market Advisory Group Report – Implications and What to do Next on Nov. 30. The Report was compiled by business, education and community leaders with Japanese experience across several sectors to determine actions that could be undertaken by the B.C. Government to retain, maintain and grow B.C.’s ties with Japan. It was presented to the Premier in May 2007. Panel presentations will be made by key stake-holders, followed by discussion on the implications of the Report.
The event will take place from 3 – 5 p.m. in Room 120 of the C.K. Choi Building, 1855 West Mall. A reception will follow from 5 – 6:30 p.m.
