Annual UBC Remembrance Day Ceremony

The UBC Remembrance Day service will be on Sunday, Nov. 11, in the War Memorial Gym at 10:50 a.m., closing Veterans’ week, Nov. 5 – 11. Doors open at 10 a.m. The ceremony will include short readings and remarks.
 
Free parking is available until 1 p.m. in the GSAB lot beside the Gym and at the meters on Wesbrook Drive (from University Boulevard north to the Bus Loop). For directions, go to www.maps.ubc.ca.

UBC elections are now open

UBC is conducting elections for its 17th Chancellor, faculty and staff representatives to the Board of Governors, and representatives to the Okanagan and Vancouver Senates. Voting ends Nov. 26.

Date correction for UBC seasonal concert

UBC’s seasonal concert for faculty and staff will be held Nov. 28 from 11:45 a.m.- 12:45 p.m. at the Chan Centre for Performing Arts. Produced by the UBC Ceremonies & Events Office with the School of Music and sponsored by the Department of Human Resources, this free concert showcases a variety of music performed by UBC School of Music students. Free tickets are required; department administrators can register attendees until Nov. 14.

UBC researcher receives NSERC award

Chris Springate, a UBC pharmaceutical researcher and 2007 UBC graduate, shared second place for the NSERC Innovation Challenge Award for his doctoral research to develop a controlled release delivery system for therapeutic drugs for certain types of cancer.

UBC looks at advancing interdisciplinarity

UBC’s College for Interdisciplinary Studies will host a day-long discussion on defining and advancing interdisciplinarity on Nov. 30 in Room 120 of the Aquatic Ecosystems Research Laboratory, 2202 Main Mall. Speakers include Prof. Gail Dubrow, Vice-Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Minnesota, and David Farrar, UBC Provost and Vice President Academic.

UBC professor wins international research award

Electrical and Computer Engineering Assoc. Prof. Robert Schober received a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in recognition of his research in wireless communications. Schober will spend six months at the University of Erlangen-Nuernberg researching ultra-wideband and multiple-input/multiple-output communications systems.

UBC interdisciplinary team honoured at U.S. conference

A UBC interdisciplinary team received the Award for Best Abstract in Clinical Application of Technology from the Society for Technology in Anesthesia at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Their paper is entitled Clinical Evaluation of iAssist: A Novel Software Tool to Detect Change in Physiological Monitoring. The team consists of Electrical and Computer Engineering Prof. Guy Dumont and graduate students Ping Yang and Chris Brouse, and Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics Assist. Sounds Like Canada interviews David Suzuki

Sounds Like Canada, a CBC national radio show hosted by Shelagh Rogers, will present a live interview with Dr. David Suzuki at 8 p.m. on Nov. 22 at Heritage Hall in Vancouver. The show is accepting suggestions for an additional guest from the Vancouver area to appear alongside Suzuki.
