UBC hosts seasonal concert for faculty and staff
UBC’s seasonal concert for faculty and staff will be held Nov. 27 from 11:45 a.m.- 12:45 p.m. at the Chan Centre for Performing Arts. Produced by Ceremonies & Events with the School of Music and sponsored by the Department of Human Resources, this free concert showcases a variety of music performed by UBC School of Music students. Free tickets are required; department administrators can register attendees until Nov. 14.

UBC professor receives achievement award
Material Engineering Prof. David Dreisinger has received a Meritorious Achievement Award from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (APEGBC) in recognition of his work leading to new technologies that have impacted metallurgic practices worldwide.
Founded in 1920, APEGBC is the regulatory and licensing body for the professions of engineering and geoscience in B.C. and is charged with protecting the public interest.

Faculty of Medicine names Irving K. Barber Chair
Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Assoc. Prof. Bruce Verchere has been named the inaugural Irving K. Barber Chair in Diabetes Research in the Faculty of Medicine. Verchere will promote collaboration between UBC’s Point Grey campus, clinical academic campuses and affiliated research sites with the goal of translating research findings from the lab to the patients’ bedsides. Verchere is also an associate member of the Departments of Surgery and Physiology, and is Head of the Diabetes Research Program at Child and Family Research Institute.
Campus and Community Planning hosts open houses on two development proposals
UBC’s Campus and Community Planning is holding two open houses to discuss the following development proposals (DP):
- DP 07024: Vancouver Hillel Foundation proposes to construct a new three storey building with social, recreational and programming spaces to replace the current Hillel House. The open house will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at Hillel House, 6145 Student Union Boulevard.
- DP 07028: UBC Athletics and Recreation proposes to install a seasonal cover over the Empire Pool to allow year round operation. The open house will take place on Thursday, Nov. 8 from 3 – 6 p.m. in Room 126 of the Aquatic Centre, 6121 University Boulevard.

UBC professor speaks at Tanner Lectures
UBC Neurology Prof. Judy Illes was one of the speakers at the October Tanner Lectures on Human Values at Cambridge University, where she spoke on medicine, neuroscience, ethics and society.
The Tanner Lectures are a collection of educational and scientific discussions relating to human values pertinent to the human condition, interest, behaviour and aspiration. The lectures were established by the American scholar, industrialist and philanthropist Obert Clark Tanner.

Physics lectures at TRIUMF
TRIUMF and UBC’s Department of Physics and Astronomy present a series of Saturday morning physics lectures addressing current issues. The series, geared for a general audience, will begin Nov. 10 with UBC Physics and Astronomy Prof. Andre Marziali speaking on Beyond CSI: Ultrasensitive DNA Analysis, followed by University of Michigan Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences Prof. Perry Samson on the Physics of Extreme Weather.

Lunch hour lecture with BBC’s Richard Black
UBC’s School of Journalism will host a lunch hour lecture with Richard Black, BBC News environmental correspondent and co-founder of the series One Planet. He will speak on News Websites: A Green Medium?
The lecture will take place from 1 – 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 in Room 104 of the Sing Tao Building, 6388 Crescent Road. For more information, visit www.journalism.ubc.ca/.
Botanical Garden dedicates bridges in Asian garden
UBC’s Botanical Garden will celebrate the installation and dedication of nine new wooden bridges in the David C. Lam Asian Garden, the largest component of the Botanical Garden. The wood for this project was harvested and milled in the South Campus area and donated by UBC Properties Trust. Botanical Garden staff prepared the site, and Land and Building Services donated their time to install the bridges.
The dedication ceremony, followed by a tea in the Botanical Garden Reception Centre, will begin at 2 p.m. on Nov. 7. For more information, contact Jodi Simkin at 604-822-4186.
