UBC names new Dean of Dentistry

Dr. Charles Shuler has been named the new Dean
of the UBC Faculty of Dentistry, effective February, 2007. Shuler
comes to UBC from the University of Southern California (USC),
where he was most recently Associate Dean, Student and Academic
Affairs. His research focuses on craniofacial development, oral
carcinogenesis and gene therapy. At USC he played a leadership
role in planning and implementing a problem-based learning dental
education program.

Shuler received his BSc in biochemistry from the University of
Wisconsin, his DMD from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, his
PhD in pathology from the University of Chicago and developed
an oral pathology specialty at the University of Minnesota and
the Royal Dental College of Copenhagen, Denmark.

UBC names Principal, College of Health
Disciplines

Louise Nasmith has been named the Principal
of the UBC College of Health Disciplines, effective June 1, 2007.
Nasmith joins UBC from the University of Toronto where she held
the position of Chair, Department of Family and Community Medicine
since 2002. Previously, she was the Chair for the Department of
Family Medicine at McGill University.

Nasmith obtained her BA from the University of Toronto and her
medical degree and education degree from McGill University. Nasmith
has been involved with a number of projects that focus on the
integration of care or chronic illness and interprofessional care
and education. She is a member of the National Expert Committee
on Interprofessional Education for Collaborative Patient-Centred
Practice, a Health Canada initiative.

Engineering student recognized as Champion
of Public Safety

UBC Mining Engineering student Doug Sweeney received the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Public Safety from
The Honourable Iona Campagnola on December 8, 2006.

The award recognizes Sweeney’s lifetime of achievements spanning
his 30-year career. As the Manager of Occupational Health and
Safety at Thompson Rivers University, Sweeney is also pursuing
his PhD in UBC’s Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering.

Engineering students’ holiday wishes
to end poverty

The UBC Chapter of Engineers Without Borders has erected a tree
in the Fred Kaiser Building as part of its "Wishes to Help
End Poverty" initiative. Passers-by are being asked to fill
out blank decorations provided to express their wishes for and
personal commitment to ending extreme poverty.

The ornaments will be sent along with a letter to local Members

Engineering students win national scholarships

Two UBC PhD students are among six Canadian engineers who recently
shared $52,500 as the 2006 recipients of the Canadian Council
of Professional Engineers (CCPE) national scholarships, which
provide financial support to professional engineers pursuing advanced
studies and research.

Civil Engineering student Andrew Wood received
the $10,000 CCPE-Manulife Financial Scholarship to research asset
management of municipal water infrastructure. Mechanical Engineering
student Conor Reynolds received the $7,500 CCPE-TD
Meloche Monnex Scholarship to investigate ways to reduce the negative
impacts of transportation emissions on public health and the environment
in urban centres.

UBC Computer Science student launches
new software

The Eclipse Foundation recently launched the UBC-developed Eclipse
Mylar 1.0, a task-focused software program that enhances developer
productivity by reducing information overload and enabling easy
multi-tasking.

Developed by UBC Computer Science PhD candidate Mik Kersten, the program gives users quick access to their most recent and
closely related information by monitoring the user’s activity
to determine what documents are most relevant to the task. It
maintains the accessibility of the items of interest and automatically
searches out related data. Mylar also simplifies task management
by allowing developers to easily switch between tasks and share
task context with other developers, thereby reducing the amount
of scrolling and searching required to fix a bug or add a new
feature.

The Eclipse Foundation is an open source community committed
to the implementation of a universal software development platform.

2006 UBC annual report feedback winner
announced

Following the Dec. 8, 2006 deadline to provide feedback on the
online version of the UBC annual report, staff member Meg
Walker was randomly selected as the recipient of the
80 GB video iPod giveaway. Walker is currently a temporary Development
Coordinator in the UBC Library Development Office.

Entitled Without Borders, the online annual report and
archived UBC annual general meeting (AGM) webcast can still be
viewed on the Public Affairs website: www.publicaffairs.ubc.ca/annualreports.
