UBC Alma Mater Society adds student voice to national Post-Secondary Education Summit
At the invitation of B.C. Minister of Advanced Education Murray Coell, UBC Alma Mater Society (AMS) President Spencer Keys will be one of only two student leaders from this province attending the upcoming Council of the Federation’s summit on Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training in Ottawa on February 23 and 24.
The summit will raise key issues and challenges facing post-secondary education, and help to plot the course for our education and skills training systems into the future.
“The invitation is welcome as sign of recognition of the AMS as a significant stakeholder with innovative ideas to bring to the table," says Keys. “We as a country have an urgent need to reexamine our educational policies in the light of a competitive international environment. We look forward to holding a dialogue with other stakeholders."

UBC student leaders to engage B.C. politicians on post-secondary education
Twenty-five members of the UBC Alma Mater Society (AMS) are paying a visit to Victoria to discuss post-secondary education issues with provincial politicians on Feb. 23, billing it as “Provincial Lobby Day.”
Through these discussions, the AMS hopes to generate continued improvements for the students of UBC and to post-secondary education. According to AMS Vice-President External Jessica Klug, the visit is inspired by a recent week-long lobby conference by the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA).
“The AMS hopes that the dialogue that began in Ottawa with federal politicians on a dedicated transfer of federal funds and pan-Canadian vision for post-secondary education will be equally successful provincially,” says Klug.

UBC alumnus wins Olympic gold
UBC School of Landscape Architecture alumnus Jeff Pain (BLA ’94) won the silver medal in men’s skeleton on Friday, Feb. 17 at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy.
The Calgary, Alberta native was part of a Canadian team that narrowly missed a medal sweep in event. Teamate Duff Gibson won the gold medal while Paul Boehm finished fourth in the first 1-2-4 finish by Canadians in an Olympic event.
"We actually talked about 1-2-3, that was the ultimate dream and the ultimate goal," said Pain, 35.
In skeleton, athletes pilot sleds head-first down an 1.4-kilometre track of ice filled with 19 curves and typically reach speeds of over 125 km per hour. Pain completed his silver medal run with a time of 1:56.14.
