Apple lovers in the Lower Mainland can get a taste of the
world’s newest variety, the Aurora Golden Gala, at UBC’s 13th
Annual Apple Festival.

This will be the first public tasting opportunity since Agriculture
and Agri-Food Canada introduced the apple in Kelowna on Oct.
2.

The apple was developed at AAFC’s Summerland, B.C. research
facility. It is medium-sized with thin, glossy yellow skin
and juicy, crisp sweet flesh. Originally known as 8S-69-23,
it got its name after the AAFC held a national contest to
find it a more memorable moniker. The winning entry, from
more than 11,000 received, came from an Ottawa woman.

The Aurora Golden Gala won’t be the only apple on offer at
UBC’s popular annual event. This year’s festival, organized
by UBC’s Friends of the Garden (FOGs), will feature more than
60 varieties of apples to sample, a sale of organic and conventional
apples and apple trees, a children’s corner, a marketplace,
a Harvest Bistro, organic apple pies, live music, a B.C. Fruit
Testers Association display, and demonstrations of espalier,
grafting and cider pressing.
