New City Charter for UBC

The City of Vancouver Council and the University of British
Columbia Board of Governors have jointly approved a Charter
between the City and UBC that promotes effective working relationships
to guide their future relations and enhance beneficial links.

The Charter complements existing relationships and reflects
the growing number of issues that require effective co-operation
among UBC, the City and the Greater Vancouver Regional District.

The Charter gives institutional weight to UBC’s increasing
presence in Vancouver beyond Point Grey. It establishes regular
meetings between the executives of the City and UBC in order
to enhance communications and build bonds on matters of mutual
interest. It will also assist in the communication of the
benefits of research being conducted at UBC.

“By establishing closer relations with the City, the
charter provides UBC with a valuable ally in federal-provincial
dealings for research infrastructure,” said UBC President
Martha Piper. “The Charter gives us new leverage.”

This is only the second time in Vancouver’s history
that the City has created a charter. The City and the Port
Authority have concluded a similar charter agreement.
