The head of one of North America’s leading providers of
energy services is the new chair of the University of British
Columbia’s Board of Governors.
John Reid, president and chief executive officer of Vancouver-based
Terasen Inc., assumed the UBC position in June 2003 and is
appointed for a term ending August 31, 2004.
“I am very honoured to be appointed to this position,” says
Reid. “I look forward to working with Martha Piper
and her team as well as my fellow governors in forwarding
the goals of this outstanding institution.”
Reid is President and CEO of Terasen Inc. (formerly BC Gas
Inc.), a position he has held since 1997. Prior to joining
Terasen, he worked for many years for Scott Paper Ltd. in
a number of executive positions and as President and CEO.
He is a graduate of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne
in England, and is a Fellow of The Institute of Chartered
Accountants in British Columbia as well as England and Wales.
A UBC board member since 2002, Mr. Reid has served on several
Boards including MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd.,
Lester B. Pearson College, B.C. Business Council, and the
Vancouver Board of Trade. He is a past chair of the United
Way campaign for the Lower Mainland.
Reid takes over from UBC alumnus and business executive
Larry Bell who served as UBC board chair since 2000.
UBC’s Board of Governors is responsible for the management,
administration and control of the property, revenue, business
and affairs of the university including the appointment of
senior officials and faculty on the recommendation of the
president.
