UILO Moves To Technology Enterprise Facility III

The University — Industry Liaison Office (UILO) has amalgamated
its two Point Grey campus offices and moved into the Technology
Enterprise Facility III (TEF III), the latest Discovery Parks building
to open at UBC. The move brings together the work related to guiding
new technologies into start-up companies, and the effort to arrange
research sponsorship. The UILO still maintains its Affiliated Hospitals
office at Vancouver Hospital’s Research Pavilion.

In the last year the UILO processed $46.7 million in industry funding,
received 141 invention disclosures from UBC faculty and students,
filed 151 patent applications, was issued 50 patents, and created
four start-up companies.

UBC Students Support Cystic Fibrosis Research
Through Shinerama Campaign

On September 6, many UBC students will be fanning across the city
to shine shoes, wash cars and perform other acts of kindness for
donations in support of cystic fibrosis research. The effort will
be part of a national, student-run fundraiser–called Shinerama–for
the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, taking place at over 60
universities and colleges across Canada.

"UBC is relatively new to the Shinerama campaign," says
Eran Norton, a campaign coordinator and programming manager of the
Alma Mater Society. "Since 1995, our students have raised $45,000.
But there’s always room for improvement. I’d like us to aim to raise
that amount in one year!"

One in 25 Canadians carries the defective gene responsible for
the disease, and those living with CF must undergo rigorous therapy
just to stay alive. Currently there is no known cure, but since
1964 students have raised over $14 million for research.

UBC Hampton Place Community Fund Plans 2nd Flea
Market Fundraiser

Building on the success of its flea market last year, the UBC Hampton
Place Community Fund is making the event an annual one. The 2nd
Annual Hampton Place Flea Market & Fair will bring together
residents and students to enjoy bargains, delicious food, prizes
and entertainment by the popular Swagmen.

This year’s event will take place on Sunday, September 14th at
the UBC War Memorial Gym Parking Lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds
from the Flea Market help support a wide range of projects important
to the community including the UBC Learning Exchange, the Hampton
Place Community Bursary, the University Detachment of the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police , and appointment of Professor Tim Stainton,
UBC School of Social Work & Family Studies as the Hampton Place
Community Fund Scholar for 2003.
