More than 1,000 participants are expected to attend the First
Annual Musqueam Indian Band All Native Youth Soccer Tournament
at UBC this weekend.
Forty-eight teams in four age categories –- between
4 and 16 — have signed up to play.
“This tournament is a way of using sport to introduce
First Nations youth to UBC and what it has to offer,” says
Sid Katz, executive director, Community Affairs at UBC.
“Our goal is to make UBC more welcoming to First Nations
youth and expand First Nations enrolment,” adds Katz.
“Musqueam welcomes the opportunity to work with UBC
in hosting the tournament on the UBC campus, in Musqueam
traditional territory,” says Daryl Hargitt, chief administrative
officer and band manager of the Musqueam Indian Band.
“This tournament will be a coming-together of close
to 50 nations and will enjoy widespread community support
from those teams represented.”
The opening ceremony will feature brief words from UBC President
Martha Piper and Musqueam Chief Ernie Campbell, and a parade
of the teams.
In addition to soccer games, there will be free campus tours,
information exhibits and UBC staff and faculty will be on
hand all weekend to answer questions.
