UBC opens its doors to alumni, friends, neighbours and their families

    next to the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts.
  • Parking: Free parking at the Rose Garden Parkade between
    Gate 3 and Gate 4 on Northwest Marine Drive.

UBC’s Alumni Day kicks off at 9 a.m. with free cinnamon buns at
the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. A performance by the UBC
Opera Ensemble, which includes Hansel and Gretel and other family
classics, will be staged and repeated between noon and 3 p.m. at
the Old Auditorium.

It’s just one of the entertainment treats taking place across campus.
There is everything from baseball to ballroom dancing, barbecues
to apple bobbing. Most are free and designed for families.

The Faculty of Education presents a Children’s Place from 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m. in the Scarfe Building at 2125 Main Mall. Storytelling,
orienteering, a Chemical Fantasia, yo-yo painting and native games
involving singing and drumming are among the attractions.

The newly re-organized Faculty of Agricultural Sciences will showcase
its four new programs at an open house beginning at 10 a.m. in the
MacMillan Building at 2357 Main Mall. It will interest anyone who
wants to know more about ecology and includes opportunities to chat
with faculty about their research. Tours of the UBC Botanical Gardens,
greenhouse, Aquaculture Research Lab and Learning Centre computer
and multimedia facilities will also be conducted.

The School of Nursing — the oldest degree-granting nursing school
in the Commonwealth — turns 80 next year. It will hold an open
house on the third floor of UBC Hospital, Koerner Pavilion from
noon to 4 p.m.

Beginners to advanced users are invited to take a cybertour and
pick up tips for Web searching at workshops in the Koerner Library
on Main Mall every hour on the hour.

Some of UBC’s finest teachers will give fascinating lectures on
topics such as sleep deprivation and the millennium at the Buchanan
Building from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Bobbing for apples and free hot cider
will also be featured at this location.
