Society’s dirty laundry hung out to dry

Hand-decorated T-shirts hung on a clothesline to represent society’s
“dirty laundry” — sexual and physical abuse — are part of a special
display Nov. 6-10 at the Student Union Building Gallery. The T-shirts
were decorated by women students to reflect their experience with
violence. The exhibit is part of the Clothesline Project, an international
effort aimed at raising awareness about violence against women.
Sponsored by the Women Students’ Office at UBC, the last display
drew over 1,000 viewers.

Students hope to watch history happen at APEC

Nearly 200 UBC students hope to get a ringside seat on history
as volunteers for APEC ’97. Chris Gorman, a fourth-year Arts student
majoring in Political Science and History, says, “I’ve always been
interested in international affairs and I see this as a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to experience history in the making.” APEC, the Asia
Pacific Economic Co-operation, is an economic forum for the discussion
of trade issues that brings world leaders to Vancouver Nov. 19-25.

Varsity athletes also earn top scores in class

“She shoots, she scores,” Laura Bennion used to shout as she tumbled
on the carpet of her family home, clutching a hockey stick. Her
childhood cry may have hinted at the on-ice success that lay ahead.
Bennion, now a UBC medical student who plays centre for UBC’s varsity
women’s ice hockey team, is one of 79 students awarded Academic
All-Canadian status last year for maintaining an academic average
of better than 80 per cent.
