Homecoming welcomes alumni back to campus

The University of British Columbia is offering an especially warm
welcome to its 120,000 alumni during Homecoming ’97, which runs
Oct. 14-19.

As well as traditional Homecoming events such as class reunions
and varsity football, a new feature this year is Alumni Day, to
be held on Saturday, Oct. 18.

“This year we really wanted to do something special for our alumni,”
said Homecoming ’97 chairs Cheryl and John Banfield (BCom ’56),
longtime supporters of UBC.

Alumni Day kicks off at 9:30 a.m. in the Chan Centre for the Performing
Arts, where guests will hear a welcoming address from UBC President
Martha Piper and be entertained by the UBC Symphony Orchestra conducted
by Jesse Read.

Visitors can get a look at the rest of campus when free bus tours
are offered from noon to 4 p.m. Much has changed since many alumni
have set foot on campus. Tour highlights will include the Morris
and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, the Sing Tao School of Journalism
and the Koerner Library.

A closer look at the new state-of-the-art Koerner Library will
be offered with tours and World Wide Web demonstrations from 1-4
p.m.

Other highlights of the day include the Alumni Lunch at Green College
with guest speaker Bernie Bressler, UBC’s vice-president, Research,
poetry readings at the First Nations Longhouse, the Apple Festival
at the Botanical Garden and aVancouver Institute Lecture featuring
educator Larry Cuban.
