Molecular biologists win Hughes Institute grants

Vanessa Auld and B. Brett Finlay fight disease one molecule at a time.

The UBC scientists have received $275,000 (U.S.) each from the Howard Hughes
Medical Institute to further research into the genesis of nerve disorders and
bacterial infections — innovative work combining genetics, biochemistry and
molecular and cell biology.

Astrophysicist detects star’s birth 5,000 light-years away

Koerner Library home to more than books

Ill health prevented Walter C. Koerner from attending the site dedication ceremony
on Nov. 4, 1993 for the new UBC library that would bear his name.

But the message he sent to be read on that occasion spoke of a dream which
becomes a reality on March 10 as the university celebrates the official opening
of the Walter C. Koerner Library.
