Curtain falls on Dorothy Somerset Studio

The stage lights of the Dorothy Somerset Studio will dim forever
on Feb. 8 when a legendary Vancouver performance space closes its
doors after almost 30 years. Named for a pioneer of the performing
arts in B.C., the Dorothy Somerset Studio fostered the early talents
of many of Canada’s theatre elite including Brent Carver, Nicola
Cavendish and Larry Lillo. Beginning with the 1997/98 season, studio
productions will move to the BC Tel Studio Theatre in the new Chan
Centre for the Performing Arts.

Extreme fliers of the bird world

Hummingbirds are clearly engineering marvels. They routinely accelerate
and decelerate at 2 Gs — three times the force that throws a car
into a skid. Lee Gass has been studying these flying phenomena for
close to 30 years. At his UBC lab, Gass and graduate students explore
how hummingbirds perceive the world, gather nectar, and perform
their extreme aerial acrobatics.

Is there life beyond the BA?

Students who wonder what to do after they graduate with their BAs
can get some answers at Beyond the BA, a forum on career opportunities
and job search methods. Corporate headhunters will tell students
how to polish up their resumés and where to look for jobs.
At another session, four UBC Arts grads will discuss how they used
their degrees as springboards to successful careers. Beyond the
BA runs Jan. 27-28 and Jan. 30-31 at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union
Building Auditorium, located next to the bus loop off University
Blvd.

Architecture builds town-gown links

The School of Architecture is forging closer ties with the professional
community — with a little help from its friends. Friends of the
School of Architecture (FOSA), a non-profit society, was founded
in 1995 to support, promote and advise the school. Since its inception
FOSA has raised $66,000 to support activities such as memorial lectures,
special courses and a student publication.
