UBC holds fall graduation ceremonies Nov. 28

Nearly 2,000 students from a range of disciplines are eligible
to receive academic degrees during the University of British Columbia’s
Fall Congregation ceremonies to be held Nov. 28 in UBC’s War Memorial
Gymnasium at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Dr. William Sauder will be installed as the university’s 15th Chancellor
at 9:30 a.m.

In addition to academic degrees, two honorary degrees will be conferred
at the beginning of each ceremony.

Carol Shields is author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel
The Stone Diaries and an accomplished writer of drama, poetry,
short stories and journalism. Among the awards she has received
are the Canadian Booksellers’ Prize in 1994, the Manitoba Book of
the Year Award and the Governor General’s Award, both in 1993, and
the Marian Engel Award in 1990. She has been writer-in-residence
at the universities of Winnipeg and Ottawa and has lectured at UBC.
She will receive an honorary Doctor of Letters following the installation
of Chancellor Sauder.

Norman Pace, a biologist at the University of California-Berkeley,
is a leader in the field of designing and conducting experiments
to detect microbial life in the far reaches of the solar system
and beneath the sea in hydrothermal vents. Pace has strong ties
to UBC through his leading role in two key programs: a biodiversity
initiative which involves cataloguing and describing organisms present
in the biosphere, and the Evolutionary Biology Program of the Canadian
Institute for Advanced Research. He will receive an honorary Doctor
of Science at the beginning of the afternoon ceremony.

Family and Nutritional Sciences, Forestry, Interdisciplinary Studies,
Library, Archival and Information Studies, Medicine, Music, Pharmaceutical
Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences, Science, and Social Work.
