Conference looks at concerns of female children

The Centre for Research in Women’s Studies and Gender Relations
is marking its fifth birthday with a one-day conference focusing
on the special concerns of children around the world, particularly
female children. Stephen Lewis, deputy director of external relations
for UNICEF, will deliver the keynote address on Oct. 18 at 7:30
p.m. in the George Curtis building (Law), Room 101. The public is
welcome to attend. Also celebrating milestones this year at UBC
are the Women’s Studies Program, established 25 years ago, and the
Women Students’ Office, 75 years old.

Writer Peggy Thompson displays many talents

Producer, author, playwright, screenwriter and teacher Peggy Thompson
is one of Vancouver’s busiest writers. Her first feature film, The
Lotus Eaters,
captured three Genies in 1995 including best screenplay.
The assistant professor of Creative Writing is also the author of
Hard-Boiled: Great Lines from Classic Noir Films and is currently
writing They Went Thataway, quotations from Hollywood Westerns.
Thompson makes her directorial debut at the Vancouver Film Festival
next month with Broken Images, a documentary about photographer
Michelle Normoyle.

Memorial for Douglas Kenny held

A memorial reception will be held in memory of President Emeritus
Douglas Kenny on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Great
Hall of the First Nations Longhouse, 1985 West Mall. All are welcome.
Kenny, former president of UBC from 1975 to 1983, died June 4.
