Library’s kids’ lit collection no child’s play

Children’s books in a university library? UBC is home to the Arkley
Collection, one of the world’s most unique treasuries of early and
rare children’s books, dating from 1713. More than 10,000 volumes
currently in the collection–from the American first edition of
Little Goody Two Shoes to Salvador Dali’s limited edition
of Alice in Wonderland–offer scholars fascinating historical

World’s pain experts convene in Vancouver

Pain has always been a universal aspect of the human condition,
but it is still poorly understood. This summer, nearly 4,000 of
the world’s leading experts will gather in Vancouver Aug. 17-22
for the Eighth World Congress on Pain to exchange ideas and information
on a wide range of related topics. “Chronic pain is the major cause
of suffering and disability today,” said Kenneth Craig, one of the
congress organizers, a professor of psychology at UBC and president
of the Canadian Pain Society. “Some forms of pain, such as back
pain, are of epidemic proportion.”
