Music professor wins third East Coast Music awardMusic professor wins third East Coast Music award

For the third time, violinist and UBC School of Music Asst. Prof. Jasper Wood has won ‘Classical Recording of the Year’ at the East Coast Music Awards for his most recent disc A Child’s Cry from Izieu – the Complete Works for violin and piano by Oskar Morawetz.

Food Services gives green report

UBC Food Services recently completed Green Report: Unveiling the UBC Food Services Sustainability Story. It is a comprehensive look at their sustainability philosophy and achievements in the past 10 years, the future outlook, responsibilities and recommendations for the future.

Engineers Without Borders hosts events

From March 2-7, the UBC Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) will host Coffee to End Poverty, a week of events focusing on UBC campus becoming completely fair-trade and championing local coffee vendors.

Coupons for local coffee shops will be distributed and part of proceeds from Fair Trade coffee sold will support EWB’s overseas work.

UBC EWB will also host an international development conference entitled Bridging The Gap. The theme, "Collaborating for Human Development: The hidden power of our choices" explores the roles of individuals, corporations, organizations, and government, and how they can come together to address the problem of extreme poverty.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. James Orbinski, who accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999 as president of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders).

Applied Science gives workshop on global systems

UBC Applied Science will host Complexities of Large-Scale Systems, a workshop offering new tools and ways to understand recent changes in our global systems - economic, political, social, environment, energy, poverty alleviation, and exploration of space.

UBC Anthropology hosts conference

On March 7, the UBC Anthropology Dept. will host a conference entitled Collaborative Dialogues: Connecting Disciplines and Communities, bringing together anthropologists and community members to share and discuss their research and its impact and relevance to contemporary communities.

The keynote address will given by Prof. Larry Zimmerman from Indiana University, who will discuss his research on the archaeology of homelessness.
