UBC engineers honoured by the Engineering Institute of Canada

The Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) will honour three UBC engineering professors for their excellence in professional service at its annual awards gala in Ottawa on March 7.

Civil Engineering’s Prof. Emeritus Peter Byrne will be awarded the Julian C. Smith Medal for his contributions to the science of earthquake engineering, liquefaction and soil-structure interaction.

Electrical and Computer Engineering ’s Prof. Victor Leung will be inducted as a Fellow of the institute for his contributions in architectural and protocol design and performance analysis for computer and telecommunication networks, with applications in satellite, mobile, personal communications and high speed networks.

Mechanical Engineering’s Prof. Nimal Rajapakse will be inducted as a Fellow of the institute for his contributions in computational mechanics, smart materials and solid mechanics, including improving the safety and stability of Canada’s underground storage of nuclear waste and controlling vibrations in Manitoba’s transmission towers.

Final call for nominations: Distinguished Academics Awards

Nominations are being accepted for the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of British Columbia (CUFA BC) Distinguished Academics Awards.

Two awards will be given: the Academic of the Year Award, and the Pat Buttedahl Career Achievement Award. Nominations must be received by Feb. 6, 2009.

CUFA BC represents 4,400 professors, instructors, professional librarians and other academic staff at UBC SFU, U Vic and Royal Roads University. The awards recognize academic staff members of B.C. public universities who have made outstanding contributions to the community through their work.

Authorfest 2009 comes to UBC

Children’s literature is the focus of Authorfest 2009, a celebration of B.C. authors sponsored by UBC’s Education Library, the Vancouver Children’s Literature Roundtable and the Department of Language and Literacy Education

The theme of this year’s program is “getting to know the environment,” and will include participants Robert Bateman, Victoria Miles and Tiffany Stone.
