University administrators to gather at UBC

UBC is the official sponsor of the International Meeting of University Administrators (IMUA) 2008 conference in Vancouver this summer. The IMUA is a forum for the discussion of management and administration issues in higher education. This year’s theme is globalization.

Speakers include Prof. Bryan Gould, an international authority on higher education; Prof. Carl Wieman, Nobel Laureate and Director of the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative at UBC; Prof. David Dolphin, Professor Emeritus in Chemistry at UBC and lead creator of Visudyne™.; Dr. Ron Dembo, founder of Zerofootprint; Prof. Rachel Gumbi, Rector and Vice Chancellor of the University of Zululand; and Dr. Dan Muzyka, Dean of the Sauder School of Business at UBC.

Engineering professor wins national medal

UBC Materials Engineering Prof. David Dreisinger has been awarded the Inco Medal from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) in recognition of his contribution to the mining and metallurgical industry of Canada.

The 11,000-member CIM is a technical society of professionals associated with the Canadian minerals and materials industry.

Indigenous speaker series launches in April

The Indigenous Speaker Series, hosted by the Division of Aboriginal People's Health of the Faculty of Medicine, will launch with guest speaker Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona, a researcher and professor at the University of Saskatchewan and advocate for Aboriginal health and medicine. He will speak on Aboriginal Models of Mind and Mental Health.

Faculty of Medicine to host Spring Gala

UBC’s Faculty of Medicine will host the 14th Annual Spring Gala, a fundraiser showcasing arts performances by medical and dental students. All proceeds go to Let Kids Play, a foundation that facilitates participation of underprivileged children in organized sport.

General seating tickets are $15, available from www.ticketmaster.ca (surcharge applies) or via the Dean's office (11th floor, Diamond Health Care Centre, VGH, or Woodward IRC Building).

Research centres take on ethics

UBC’s Centre for Korean Research will host a lecture by Assist. Prof. Jesook Song, Department of East Asian Studies, University of Toronto, on Enjoyment as Ethics of Cultivating Self and Care for the Self: Family-Independent Women in the Post-Asian Debt Crisis in South Korea.
