Abortion pill dispensed by only doctors could hinder access

CBC reported on the availability of the abortion pill mifepristone in Canada, and featured a commentary written by two UBC professors.

Wendy Norman, a professor at UBC’s school of population and public health and Judith Soon, a professor in the faculty of pharmaceutical sciences, described why they believe pharmacists should be able to dispense mifepristone.

Norman and Soon said medical abortion could decrease the disparity between urban and rural areas when it comes to abortion services.

Soon spoke to Global BC on the same topic.

“What I’m concerned about is access for women who are in rural and remote settings,” she said. “With this medical abortion pill, then women in remote areas can have their family physician prescribe it, have their community pharmacist dispense it, so it’s all closer to home. So that’s the hope.”
