Should athletes get EKGs to prevent sudden death?

Stat News featured UBC cardiology research that described alternative screening procedures for young athletes at risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

The study found the best screening method included a questionnaire designed to differentiate between symptoms of serious cardiac disease and less dangerous conditions, combined with electrocardiograms.

The questionnaire included questions meant to distinguish between dizziness, fainting spells, or chest pain caused by serious heart conditions rather than more common causes, such as exertion.

“It’s designed to be more specific in identifying symptoms that are concerning,” said UBC cardiologist and lead study author James McKinney.
