Blue Jays beer-toss aftermath reveals crowd-sleuthing dangers

A 2012 UBC sociology study by Christopher Schneider and Daniel Trottier was cited in a Toronto Star story on the danger of crowd-sleuthing.

A man was the subject of outrage on social media after he threw a beer can onto the field during a Toronto Blue Jays game near a player. He faced digital vigilantism similar to the situation following the 2011 Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver.

Schneider and Trottier found that digital vigilantism slowed the police investigation related to the riots.
