Discussing the types of human pride

Jessica Tracy, a professor in UBC’s department of psychology, spoke to NBC’s New Day Northwest about her book Take Pride.

She discussed the two types of pride that she has studied in her research on different types of emotion.

“We’ve come up with these labels, authentic pride and hubristic pride,” she said. “Authentic pride is the good kind of pride. It’s basically a sense of self-confidence… Hubristic pride, we got that word hubris from the Greek who used it to apply to people who thought they were too great, people who thought they were more god-like than human. And in modern day we know people like this.”

Tracy’s research was also featured in Maclean’s and on Roundhouse Radio.
