Cruise ship sails for the Arctic, thanks to climate change

The Washington Post quoted Michael Byers, a UBC professor and Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law, for a story on a luxury cruise ship voyage that has been made possible thanks to climate change.

Apart from environmental concerns Byers addressed safety issues associated with the trip.

“If the entire ship — all 1,000 passengers, all 600 crew — require search and rescue, for instance, if the ship sinks, then that would actually break the Canadian search-and-rescue system,” he said.

Reuters Africa and Radio Canada also quoted Byers for articles on the same topic.
