Emergency preparedness in B.C.

Kent Johansen, a technical engineer with the earthquake engineering research facility at UBC, discussed B.C.’s emergency preparedness on CBC’s B.C. Almanac (segment starts at 40:15).

Johansen recommends preparing a kit with three days’ supplies, and stashing it in a convenient place such as near the window or in the car. Agree on a meeting point, such as one of Vancouver’s identified disaster hubs, with your loved ones and do an earthquake dry run. While cellphones may stop working, the data service could continue and it might still be possible to contact loved ones on social media, Johansen said.
