KUCB: The case of the vanishing seals: An Alaskan Island mystery
UBC fur seals researcher Andrew Trites highlighted the plight of seal populations in the Pribilofs, which have fallen 80 percent in recent decades. In an interview with Alaska station KUCB, Trites described his research on why the seals have disappeared. Much of the work involves studying the seals’ diet, through examining their fecal samples. Times of India: Lesbian teens engage in riskier sex
Many people think that lesbian teens are in a low sexual risk category, but a new study co-authored by UBC researcher Elizabeth Saewyc shows that sexual orientation doesn’t always align with sexual behaviour. One in five lesbians in the U.S. who are sexually active reported recently having sex with a man, according to a survey by Saewyc and colleagues. Times of India

CBC News: Wood highrises designed in B.C. are sustainable and safe
B.C.’s wood highrises was the focus of a CBC News report. UBC’s Brock Commons student residence, an 18-storey timber tower will be one of the world’s tallest wood buildings when completed in 2017, says UBC’s John Metras, adding that the building is the equivalent of taking 480 cars off the road for a year. Global News: What you need to know about bike helmets
With Vancouver set to announce a bike sharing service this summer, Global News featured two segments on bike helmet safety featuring UBC mechanical engineering professor Peter Cripton. Cripton tested a popular bike helmet and said that while it passed an impact test, it’s important for helmets to be industry-certified.
