University of British Columbia students have spent the past two weeks designing, building, and testing water-jet powered vehicles operated by remote control. Today, they will find out who has designed the fastest boat of them all.
The boats are no bigger than a briefcase and were built as part of a design course at UBC. They will be on display today at the Robson Square Plaza from 10:30 a.m. to noon, with the competition starting shortly after and concluding by 2:30 p.m.
Twenty teams of second-year UBC Mechanical Engineering students will compete in five rounds of fast-paced competition that will test their vehicles’ speed, manoeuvrability, and performance over long distances.
“This project challenges students to work together, applying ingenuity and engineering analysis, to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems,” says UBC mechanical engineering professor and course coordinator Peter Ostafichuk.
The event is open to the public. Media are advised to contact Erinrose Handy at 604.822.1524, or via e-mail at erinrose.handy@ubc.ca
