Members from the UBC community are among the 71 finalists in YWCA Metro Vancouver’s 32nd Annual Women of Distinction Awards. The awards honour extraordinary women leaders, businesses and organizations that contribute to the well-being and future of communities across Metro Vancouver. Winners will be announced at a reception at the Vancouver Convention Centre on May 26. More information here.
Three UBC-led projects received $51,400 in funding from NSERC’s PromoScience program. The three projects were part of a $3.6 million investment announced March 18 to introduce young Canadians to careers in science-based fields. The program supports community-based science camp and outreach activities for elementary and high-school students.
Niamh Kelly received $11,700 for Creative Science, Jakob Manning received $29,800 for Geering Up Satellite Programming in Kelowna, Prince George and Inner City Vancouver, and Christopher Waltham received $9,900 for the UBC Physics & Astronomy Outreach Program. More information here.
Funded by the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship and UBC, the School of Engineering (SoE) at UBC’s Okanagan campus, is leading a $1.1-million project, Innovative Solutions for Developing and Managing Climate Resilient Transport Infrastructure in South Asia Region: A Lifecycle Thinking Approach. Professor Rehan Sadiq, acting director of SoE, is the principal investigator.
The joint Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee-UBC scholarship will enable 24 student scholars, 16 interns and 20 international exchange students to work with Sadiq and SoE researchers in investigating sustainable transport infrastructure in South Asia. More information here.
Daniel Pauly, a professor at the UBC Fisheries Centre, has been named the recipient of the 2015 Peter Benchley Ocean Award for Excellence in Science. Pauly is the founder and leader of the ‘Sea Around Us’ project and is a world leader in identifying overfishing as a threat to marine ecosystems and global food security. He is known for developing the concept of ‘Shifting Baselines’ and scientifically documenting and explaining ‘fishing down the food web.’
The Peter Benchley Ocean Awards recognize excellence in marine conservation solutions across a wide range of expertise including science, policy, media, youth, exploration and citizen activism. The annual awards ceremony will take place on May 14 in Washington D.C. More information here.

English professor Sherrill Grace‘s new book Landscapes of War and Memory is a finalist in the 2014 INDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards in the War and Military (Adult Nonfiction) category. The awards help connect readers to previously unknown authors and are given by Foreword Reviews, a review magazine solely dedicated to discovering new indie books. UBC Archaeology Day 2015 aims to raise public awareness of the ever increasing destruction of cultural heritage and archaeological resources in many parts of the world.
The keynote speaker Michael Danti (Department of Archaeology, Boston University) will discuss the endangered cultural heritage in Iraq and Syria.
Speakers from UBC will include Christopher Arnett and Peter Merchant (Department of Anthropology) and Lynn Welton, Ryan Johnson, Courtney Innes (Department of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies).

UBC professors will speak at the BIL Conference this weekend in Vancouver. The yearly gathering brings together technologists, scientists, artists, hackers and those with a passion for community awareness, social entrepreneurship, and innovation.
Mandy Len Catron (English), Carrie Ichikawa Jenkins (Philosophy) and Marina Adshade (Economics) will be presenting “Love Faculty: Three Perspectives on Modern Love.” Alfred Hermida (Journalism) will give a talk titled “Why nobody sees what you tweet and how to do something about it.”
