Electrical and Computer Engineering professors Purang Abolmaesumi and Vincent Wong have won the 2014 UBC Killam Research Fellowships to assist in furthering their research projects. Killam Research Fellows dedicate themselves to their research full-time during a recognized study leave. Recipients are nominated by their peers. Click here for more information.

your evolution: alumni UBC’s online sharing platform supports those making a difference

alumni UBC is calling on UBC graduates, students, faculty, staff, volunteers, and donors who are involved in a socially beneficial project to upload their stories on www.yourevolution.ubc.ca until March 1, 2015. Ten projects will be shortlisted by March 9 and the public will be asked to vote for their favourite project.

The winner will receive a “social entrepreneur support kit” that includes:

  • Professional photography session or the production of a video to help its cause
  • Mentoring session with UBC President Arvind Gupta
  • Access to a consultation with a UBC faculty member in an area most relevant to the project’s needs (e.g. business, law, engineering, computer science).

Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs program accepting applications

UBC’s new Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs program is a 20-month professional program for those looking to begin or enhance their careers as policy professionals in global policy-making environments. Students will gain multi and trans-disciplinary analytical and creative design skills, strengths in development, sustainability, and global governance, and an informed perspective on pressing global challenges, including a lens on cross-Pacific dynamics.

The program is jointly delivered by the Institute of Asian Research, Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, and the Liu Institute for Global Issues. UBC student wins $2,500 for research presentation on reducing whiplash injuries

Mechanical engineering master’s student Alicia Figueira won third place in the AUTO21 TestDRIVE competition, receiving $2,500 for her presentation on her research focused on mitigating whiplash injuries in low-speed, rear-end collisions. Click here for more information.

UBC SailBot team learns how to detect obstacles in upcoming cross-Atlantic voyage

UBC SailBot, the robotic sailing team of computer science and engineering students, is preparing to launch their 5.5 metre long sailboat off the coast of Newfoundland this summer in an attempt to become the first fully autonomous, unmanned vessel to cross the Atlantic. Previous attempts by other teams have resulted in sailboats going missing or capsizing when colliding with debris, icebergs, or other vessels. Applied Science presents distinguished alumni lecture

The Faculty of Applied Science presents guest lecturer and UBC alumnus, Gane Ka-Shu Wong (BASc’83). Wong will speak about DNA/RNA sequencing and its applications for medicine, science and applied science. Wong has worked with the Human Genome Project, helped found BGI-Shenzhen (formerly Beijing Genomics Institute), and currently works at the University of Alberta as an AITF/iCORE Strategic Chair.
